And so it begins...

Not very exciting yet but my latest lockdown project leaves the drawing board and starts it's journey towards being a reality.

I use Duffel style travel bags a lot and for a while I've fancied making a nice canvas and leather one to co-ordinate with some of my other luggage. ( I know, daft isn't it? )

One thing I didn't want to change about the design is the mesh pocket under the lid flap, just because it is so useful.

What I can do though is over engineer it to within an inch of it's life and as this will be a component that is required early in the construction sequence, this is the first part of the build.

All the critical seams will be hand stitched so this should keep me busy for a while. Hopefully, by the time it is finished I might be able to travel somewhere with it.

I'm having difficulty motivating myself on this at the moment. Possibly because I should have been on my way to the airport about now for a camping trip to Kittilä in Northern Finland.

Anyway, one of the things I find very useful on a travel bag is an external pocket for documents and a book sometimes. On most commercial duffel bags these are on the side which makes it awkward for keeping anything flat in.

I've decided to mount mine on the top of the lid flap, which is flatter and much more convenient when the bag is on the ground in my opinion.

A secure luggage label is useful as well. Mine usually carry name, address and passport number on the back should the bag and I become separated. ( Not very likely with my cabin bag but you never know. )
